Weekly Update Feb 18th, 2019

Dear EY2 Parents,

Hope you had a nice long weekend. Our young students were full of stories today when we saw each other again, so it seems that you had a busy little break.

We had a  busy short week in our classroom.

We continued our UOI Exploring Materials. We were building with cardboard in small groups. First we were drawing our individual blueprints about the project and then made small groups based on similar ideas. Then the group members were figuring out different ways to combine the ideas and made a group plan. During the project students were using all their transdisciplinary skills: social skills, communication skills, thinking skills, research skills and self-management skills. They were manipulating the cardboard by cutting and taping things together. This week we start to manipulate natural materials like wood and clay. Let’s see what we can make out of them!

In Math we have been making different shapes with geoboards and rubber bands. Students have been using them very creatively. Some students have been building and counting with unifix cubes. After 100th day of school we have moved to BIG numbers.

Our lego and block builders show great imagination and good mathematical thinking when they plan and build their different building, machines and robots. Students are also practicing their math skills by using ICT

We celebrated Valentine’s Day by making cards to each other. Lots of meaningful writing was happening in class and lots of love was in the air!

And we have another 5-years old in our classroom! Happy Birthday Tanya!

Coming soon:

different languagesInternational Mother Tongue Day

On Thurs. 21st Feb., KIS will be recognizing International Mother Tongue Day. We will celebrate by reading books and telling stories to the students in different languages. We are asking for your support to come into KIS and read or tell a story to a group of students in your first language.

If you sign up, you will be reading or telling stories for about 10 minutes to a range of students from EY1 to Grade 2 in the AudiBox. These students may or may not include your own children. Each session lasts for 40 minutes and will be shared by 4 adults – so about 10 minutes each. Please refer to the schedule at this link to sign up. Translation into English is not necessary. We will have a computer and projector available if you would like to share a story on a screen.

If you do want to read to the EY 2 class, please speak to your child’s teacher and we can organize it in the classroom.
