Weekly Update March 18th, 2019

Dear EY2 parents,

we are almost in the end of our UOI “Exploring Materials. We have talked about paper, cardboard, metal, wood, fabric, glass and plastic. We have been observing different materials and we talked about their properties. Our young students have developed their understanding of materials’ suitability for different purposes.

mystery boxThank you for all the parents who helped their child to find something suitable for the mystery box game.  Some parents have been super creative and they have helped their child to make their own mystery boxes. You don’t need to make a box, but if your child has not brought an artifact for the box, please bring it as soon as  possible. Bring it in a box or a bag so that other students can’t see it. Please, help your child to practice how to tell at least 3 things about the object! Students have had great fun playing the game in small groups; making questions and keeping the secrets (so hard for our young students) and same time increasing their receptive (listening) and expressive (speaking) vocabularies through social interactions and through play.

Students have been  exploring the science concept of floating and sinking with Ms Risa, who  invited them to play, experiment and explore how and why different objects and materials float and sink when placed into water. Some of the materials even changed when they were in the water. Students had an opportunity to learn through inquiry so many things. Students developed their language skills by using descriptive words to express ideas and opinions. They practiced also their writing skills when making predictions and observations. They developed their scientific thinking: predictions, observations, comparison, reasoning, data gathering, experimentation and evaluation. Students practiced also their social skills when working in a small group.

We have been learning about 3D shapes in class and our students have been “hunting 3D shapes” around the school. They have taken photos of the shapes by ipads. Please, encourage you child to find 3D shapes at home. We are looking forward seeing their photos from home.

Our literacy groups continue meeting 4 times a week. We have moved our meeting time to early morning time so it’s very important that we all are in time at school.

Our next UOI will be “How we express ourselves”. We have read fairy tales in class and we will add drama elements to these old stories. You might have heard “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” characters talking at home too.

World Water Day – Friday 22nd March, 2019

world-water-day-world-water-day-poster-concept-110303956“World Water Day is an annual UN observance day (always on 22 March) that highlights the importance of freshwater. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources. World Water Day is celebrated around the world with a variety of events. These can be educational, theatrical, musical or lobbying in nature. The day can also include campaigns to raise money for water projects. The first World Water Day, designated by the United Nations, was commemorated in 1993. Each year many countries celebrate World Water Day.”

This year at KIS, EY3 is in charge of raising awareness for this special day. They host a dress-down day ‘fundraiser’ of sorts: On Friday 22nd March, students, staff, parents, and everyone else in the KIS community should wear blue. You can also donate drinking bottles ( we really try to reduce plastic waste in Thailand).

Donations will be given to The Mercy Centre.

Mercy-Preschool-children-Kristals-class“The Mercy Centre is an NGO located within the Klong Toey slum in Bangkok. It is an organisation that is deeply connected with the community and has been working with the community to improve their lives for almost 40 years. The centre provides a home for 200 orphaned or homeless children, legal aid for children in need, an HIV Aids healthcare program, 23 preschools and a community center.”
