EY2 Classroom Staff
Ms. Tuovi, EY2A Homeroom Teacher
My name is Tuovi Pahkasalo. I come from Finland and I have lived in Bangkok for four years. When I graduated as an Early Learning Teacher in 1985 from the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, I couldn’t imagine the wonderful experiences that life would offer me.
I have lived in ten different countries (Finland, Romania, Kuwait, Russia, Estonia, China, Poland, Hungary, India and now Thailand) and I have taught in ten different schools; I have enjoyed every moment. I am a lifelong learner and I love reading and traveling. I did my Masters of Education in Poland in 2002. I value diversity and different opinions and I strongly believe that the world would be much better place if we took risks and trusted other people.
I have been married for 33 years and I have two wonderful boys who have traveled with us throughout their childhoods. Now 26-years old Aleksi just graduated in United States and 28-years old Tuomas is working and studying in Finland. Motherhood has been another source of education in my life. I acknowledge the importance of the parents’ opinions and thoughts because our collaboration is the key to finding the child’s individual strengths and needs. I hope that I can build strong relationships with you all.
I enjoy the challenges and the responsibilities PYP program offers. I get excited easily and I share that excitement with my students on a daily-basis. At KIS we want our students and teachers to be inspiring individuals and responsible global citizens who are engaging in meaningful action. We want to develop a caring, safe and accepting learning environment in our classrooms where our students feel nurtured and inspired to learn and take risks. At KIS we want to create caring and inclusive community and it feels wonderful to be part of it.
Teaching at International Schools and collaborating with different people has given me friends from all over the world and I’m thankful for these opportunities to grow. I began my third year at KIS and I am looking forward to making new friends again this year.
Can’t wait to hear your stories and to make connections!
Ms. Risa, EY2B Homeroom Teacher
My name is Risa Lambert, and I come from Toronto, Canada. Along with being a teacher, I see myself as a lifelong learner, and learn something new from the children every day! I am inspired by the sense of wonder and natural curiosity that our little people possess – this is the energy that propels a joyful learning community.
I completed my B.A. in Sociology & Psychology at McGill University in 2003, and then a Bachelor of Social Work degree there in 2005. In 2012, I earned a M.A. in Child Study & Education at the University of Toronto, to become an Ontario Certified Teacher. Over my 15 years experience with young people, I have worked as a therapist for children with autism, a support worker in children’s mental health centres, and an EAL teacher in Taipei and Shanghai. I also taught French Immersion Kindergarten in Toronto, using an inquiry and play-based curriculum at a culturally diverse public school, before moving to Thailand in 2015 to teach in a Reggio Emilia-style international Kindergarten.
This will be my second year teaching PYP at KIS, a program that blends seamlessly with my philosophy of education and the best elements of my teaching experiences. I believe in the essential role of play for child development and learning, and in the power of art as an expressive language. I also believe that as we nurture curiosity, creative thinking, and inquiry, our children develop a thirst for learning and tools of the mind that they can use for the rest of their lives. Finally, I feel that one of the most important lessons we can teach our children is the strength of open-minded communities that celebrate diversity. This is the kind of community I aim to create in our classroom, and hope to see our children lead in the future.
I am so pleased to be joining the EY2 team this year. The children bring me something to smile and laugh about every day, and I can’t wait to see how they will grow throughout the year!
Ms. Noi, EY2 Educational Assistant
My name is Noi and I’m from Pak Chong in Nakorn Ratchasima. I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Ratchaphatphetburiwittayalongkon University and a Masters in Education from Sukothai Thammathirat University.
I have been a Thai teacher at international and bilingual schools since 1998 and have been an EA in Early Years at KIS since 2011.
I enjoy dancing and singing, travel and cooking and love working with the Early Years team.
Please say ‘hi’ if you see me around and if you have any questions or concerns it will be my privilege to help you as best as I can.
I’m looking forward to a great year of learning with EY2.
Ms. Aom, EY2 Educational Assistant
I have been working as an educational assistant here at KIS for 8 years. Before I started working on education areas I used to work in entertainment as guidance vocalist, events organizers and tv channels before so I know I love to sing and play with the kids. When I graduated, my first full time job was Gymboree. That place taught me a lot of things about child development and I realized that I loved to work with kids and speak English more. Those experiences made me learn new things because kids are different. They have their own ways. It is interesting to know more about academics in the international school. After that I decided to go work in the ASB then move to work here till now.
Time flies really fast!!! Hopefully my experience would help your children and me have a precious time together throughout this year.
