Unit of Inquiry: Artifacts
People design and create using observations from nature.
We have received quite a few artifacts for our current Unit of Inquiry.

Thank you, parents for your ongoing support regarding your child’s learning. Artifacts are an important element in making connections to key concepts and ideas connected to our transdisciplinary theme, How the World Works.

If you haven’t yet sent in an artifact for this unit, please do so as soon as possible. The artifact can be anything that connects to ‘nature’.

Students should be able to discuss what they have brought and how it is connected to nature. Thank you.

Classroom Centers
Last week students continued exploring centers involving the 5 senses as well as practicing how to formulate questions. They also experimented with designing and creating their own inventions using parts of objects and gadgets that they disassembled in the previous couple of weeks.

Last Friday, the classroom centers were cleared away and we challenged the students to come up with ideas of activities/games/resources that we could create using only natural items that they could gather outside. We then brought back a variety of materials as seen in the slideshow below.

Students enjoyed using their thinking skills, creativity, and imagination to explore the possibilities with the items that were collected.

This week…
EY3 students will be celebrating our 100th Day of School and exploring different ways of showing what a collection of 100 items looks like. We will also be looking at symmetry as well as constructing 2D and 3D shapes.

In light of our recent heightened awareness surrounding general hygiene and cleanliness, we will be conducting a germs experiment (using slices of bread in separate baggies) that will hopefully illustrate the importance of washing our hands properly to help us stay healthy.

We will let you know our results next week.

Library/Reading Resources
Screen Shot 2019-08-23 at 1.03.17Please return library folders to us every Friday morning.
If for some reason your child does not return their folder on time, please return it to the EY3 classroom (not to the PYP library) at your earliest convenience. We keep a record in class of library book returns, and students are part of this process.
Thank you for your support.

Coding at Home
As many of our students have been enjoying coding, some parents have been asking about access to our EY3 class CodeSpark Academy account.

CodesparkWhat is ‘Coding’?
Coding is the process of using a programming language to get a computer to behave how you want it to. Every line of code tells the computer to do something, and a document full of lines of code is called a script.

In order to access your child’s current class account, you must first download the app (available in both the App Store as well as the Google Play Store).

In order to sign in to the classroom account, you will need a 5-character class code, which Mr. Eric (our IT teacher) can request.
Once generated, this code is valid for only 2 hours.

One final code will be generated this Thursday after 6:00 PM and will be emailed to you at that time. This will be your final chance to access the app for free.
After this, you may access it for the regular registration price as listed on the app.
