Last week…
Unit of Inquiry: Nature Inspires

People design and create using observations from nature.
Students explored their creativity through a variety of art activities including cactus still-life drawing as well as making pictures and patterns using natural materials/loose parts.

Students are also constructing an understanding about what it means to use their senses to make observations. They have been using magnifying glasses to take a closer look at many different types of seeds.

Guest Speaker
We would like to say a big THANK YOU to Nate’s father (Mr. Joshua) who came to EY3 last Friday to talk to us about gemstones. He brought in a variety of samples for us to see and told us stories about how they are retrieved. He also brought in a Spanish Dollar (coin), otherwise known as a piece of eight, and told the story of how these coins were on a ship leaving Peru and the ship was spotted by pirates. The captain of the ship holding the coins, saw the pirates coming and sunk the ship on purpose.

Who doesn’t love a good pirate story?

Food Prep
Last Friday we begun a series of food prep activities where some students learned how to make berry sorbet with just 3 ingredients: frozen berries, condensed milk (non-dairy, made from coconut milk), and lime zest. All natural ingredients.

Nature can inspire us to create delicious treats.

Numeracy (Measurement)
Students are continuing to explore water play in groups in class. They have a choice of a variety of containers (beakers, pipettes, graduated cylinders, funnels, tubes, etc.) with which to explore the properties of water, and how different containers can hold the same volume.

Some students have been using Unifix cubes and snap cubes to measure how tall, wide, or long different objects are. Others are beginning to make connections to an analog clock and at what times of the day different things happen (morning snack, lunch time, afternoon dismissal, etc.)

This week…
EY3 students will be continuing to participate in different food prep activities (if they wish to do so). We will also be having a garden vegetable sale on Thursday 12th March at 2:30 PM. If you are at school on Thursday afternoon, please come by to check it out.

We also have another parent guest speaker/expert coming to visit us this week.
Parents, if you have ideas about how nature inspires design and would like to be a guest speaker/expert, please send us an email to let us know. We’d love to hear from you.

We will also be meeting with our Grade 10 Reading Buddies once again this Friday.

Coronavirus Awareness
We would like to say ‘thank you’ to Matt in EY3C who brought in some child-friendly information about the Coronavirus and shared it with his classmates.

Thank you, Matt, for helping us understand more about this virus and what we can do to stay safe and healthy.

Library/Reading Resources
Screen Shot 2019-08-23 at 1.03.17Please return library folders to us every Friday morning.
If for some reason your child does not return their folder on time, please return it to the EY3 classroom (not to the PYP library) at your earliest convenience. We keep a record in class of library book returns, and students are part of this process.

Thank you for your support.
