Term 2 Week 1: January 10th-14th

Congratulations

EY1 Students – Congratulations to you on completing your first week back to school and to our new students for your first week at KIS. Given all the changes that you have had to adjust to, you all did FABULOUSLY! A few of our students are still missing their mommies a bit in the mornings. But let’s face it, mommies are pretty great! 🥰

Congratulations also to you, the parents. Your time and effort spent with your children online these past few months have really helped them to be familiar with us and the routines of the class, which has helped instill in them much confidence and a sense of security about going school. Thank you!

Welcome to New Families

A HUGE welcome to our new families again! Asher, George, Lalin, Mabel, Myra and families, we are happy to have you join KIS and our EY1 Class community. If you haven’t had a chance already, please join the EY1 Class Line Group. We are very lucky to have 3 parent volunteers supporting our class. Thank you K. Vandee (Ty’s Mom), K. Na (Anya’s Mom) and K. Tuk (Proud’s Mom)!

This Week in EY1

As this week is our first week back, adjusting back to school life again may take some time for our EY1 children. They are also coming at an earlier time than before, being with all EY1 classmates in person for the first time as well as having classes with Mr. Max for PE and Mr. Chris for Music in person for the first time. That is a lot for our EY1 children to take in so don’t be surprised if they are very tired by the end of the week. Many shared that they like coming to school but also look forward to “Home Time” because they “miss their mommy.” (Sorry Dads! It’s how things are in the EY1 world. 😜) Below is a video of children at “Home Time,” eagerly waiting for your arrival. So cute!!

Another exciting thing that happened this week is that we celebrated Ty’s birthday with him at school!

This week and next week, we will continue to work on getting to know each other again and getting to know our new friends. We are also learning the routines of the classroom and how to be safe when at school. Another thing that has been very fun this week is seeing our specialist teachers and having lessons with them in person for the first time! We were able to have PE lessons outdoors. Our Music lessons are in the EY1 classroom for now until they are more familiar with the new schedule and routines. Fun Friday this week included fun with Art and a Seesaw activity about being safe at school.

To Note for Next Week…

  • Library Books – Due back on Mondays
Please help the children pack and bring back the library books on Mondays. Book checkouts will be on Tuesdays.

  • PE Classes – Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays
On these 3 days, please have students come to school in their PE uniforms. This will allow them to stay cooler. Students can wear their traditional uniforms on Thursdays and Fridays.

  • Outdoor Play
Students have outdoor play on the playground everyday! This is one of their favorite things to do in the day. Be sure to ask them about it. THANK YOU for sending their water bottles with filled water. They have been very good at drinking their water. We also have water coolers at school that we can help them top up should they need it. They have also been very responsible to carry their bottles themselves to and from the classroom.

  • Snack Time
Snack Time is between 9:00 – 10:00 each day. Please be sure they have something to eat in the morning so they are not too hungry by that time.

  • Lunch Time
EY1 Lunch Time is from 11:10 AM each day. Usually by this time, the children are hungry. However, this may be early for some children compared to when they usually eat lunch at home. So the children may be ready for a snack by the time they get home from school.

Thank you again for all your support this week. Your preparation with the children’s backpacks with spare clothes and masks, water bottles, ID cards, etc. have helped them to feel more comfortable while at school. We are grateful for your continued support and partnership!

Wishing everyone a restful weekend and we look forward to seeing the children again next week!

Week 18: December 12th – 17th

Dear EY1 community,

Congratulations on completing your first Term at KIS. It may not have been the experience we had hoped for but we have made the best of it! We really appreciate that you all kept an open mind and a positive attitude during these challenging times of remote learning and the hybrid model this term.

Many families took part in the Annual Christmas Giving Tree tradition either by sending in donations for under the tree with their children or donations online via the QR code. We thank you for your generosity. Please continue to have conversations about how lucky we are and how even our smallest actions can make a big difference.

Happy Birthday to Grace and Vicky who turned 4 years old this week!! Thank you for celebrating your special day with us and we hope you had lots of fun!

Thank you to all of our EY1 friends and families for providing such delicious treats for our end-of-term holiday party. The children looked amazing in their special party clothes showcasing their individuality and personal style.

We had our last specialists classes for the term with our good friends, Mr Max and Mr Chris. As always, we had lots of fun together. Our WACKY WEDNESDAY call on Wednesday was all about SNOWMAN this week. We learned a new song, listened to a story and engaged in a guided drawing activity. The children were encouraged to draw a snowman on their whiteboards. We reflected and made connections to the story while also revisiting our knowledge or shapes and sizes. Here’s the link to the story and song in case the children would like to listen again:

Important Dates – Looking ahead

  • Dec. 20th  –  Jan. 7th – December Break – NO SCHOOL
  • Jan. 10th  –  First Day of Term 2

Information on the Start of Term 2

Next term, our start and finishing times will be different than what they are currently. Our daily schedule for EY1 will begin at 7:50am and end at 12:20pm. It will be a big change for the children and it would be great if you could help prepare them for this. Having adequate rest can help them to be more resilient at school and have more enjoyable school days. We strongly suggest that families begin to adjust their bedtime and morning routines now and especially during the break. Practising getting up and allowing enough time to prepare for school and to arrive at school on time.

Staggered Start Monday Jan 10th & Tuesday Jan 11th

Ms June will be sending out information over the break in regards to staggered start groups for the first two days of school next term.

To all the parents who have spent time supporting your child for the past few months, THANK YOU!! We understand and appreciate what a challenge it must’ve been to have to take on multiple roles with your children. Here’s to a nice break ahead. You deserve it. Both Parents and Children!

Happy Holidays!

This week’s check-in activity challenged the students to draw on their Christmas Tree to show how they are feeling. Students were creative, both in how much details they wanted to share as well as the reasons explaining why they were feeling what they’re feeling.

One of the other things we focused on this week was learning about what it means to be kind and what it looks like when we practice kindness with each other. See below for links to the stories we shared with the students this week.

Children continued to be active in our specialist classes – PE, Music, Art and Storytime. On our WACKY WEDNESDAY call this week, we listened to a story about a Christmas Tree who did not want to be just a Christmas tree. Then, as a class, we decorated our EY1 Christmas Tree together online. The children practiced waiting for their turns as well as their listening and speaking skills to describe what decorations they would like to add to the tree. Here’s the link to the story in case the children would like to listen to the story again: Oh, Christmas Tree by Sue Hendra & Paul Linnet.

7 Types of Rest
Link to Article: 7 Types of Rest Every Person Needs by Saundra Dalton-Smith

We still have a week of school left until the end of this term and then it’s our three weeks break. It’s not too early to think about REST. We often plan for activities. But it is just as important that we plan for REST also. Over the holiday break, have a plan with your child about the rest they need. Rest is not something we can just do in one day. It takes time for our body to recuperate. It is very much like charging our phone batteries. It cannot be done in an instance, but over a period of time. As you have already seen, by the children’s second day of on-campus learning, the children were tired. With plenty of rest built up, the children will be more likely to have successful days at school and better equipped to learn. Good habits start now!

Have a wonderful and restful weekend! We look forward to seeing you again next week for our last week of Term 1..

KIS’s Annual Christmas Giving Tree 2021

The KIS’s Annual Christmas Giving Tree is a way the KIS Community comes together to support the broader community that we are a part off. It is a wonderful opportunity to have conversations with our children about appreciation for all that we have and ways to practice being generous and kind. Please support this great initiative! See attached flyer for more information.

Week 16: Nov 29th – Dec 3rd

Dear EY1 community,

It’s been a fun and busy week in EY1. We continue to support our EY1 students as they adjust to challenges of the hybrid model and separating from loved ones. This transition requires children to be brave, open-minded and balanced learners as they adapt to change and develop relationships with both their teachers and peers.

This Week’s Learning & Fun
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This week we had our Cat friends help us check in online and at school. During Small Group  Calls and Circle Time, the children were invited to greet their friends with different meows sounds. Some friends chose to be LOUD cats, some were quiet and some were sleepy cats! We also made wonderful Cat crafts with Ms Noi at our craft center this week.

In Circle Time this week we introduced a new center of matching upper and lowercase letters and a new song to support our understanding. The children are becoming more familiar with the daily schedule and the playground continues to be the favourite for most.

We also introduced a new transition strategy for tidying up after meal times. The children follow the steps below as they are encouraged to be respectful and choose a quiet activity until all friends have finished eating.

The children really enjoyed the online Sports Day this week. They had great fun and engaged in both live sessions and  Seesaw activities to obtain points for their Houses. In small groups this week, we focused on the letter C, the sound and identifying words with the beginning sound. Music and PE continue to be highlighted for some children and we always look forward to seeing our friends Mr Max and Mr Chris online each week.

Don-t-compare-your-life-to-others-331235

This quote is a nice reminder and it applies to how we view our children as well. Please don’t compare your child to another, whether it’s with a sibling or another child! Our children will shine in their own time, just like our Sun and Moon. As you know well, our children are all unique and special in their own ways, with their own gifts and struggles. Some struggles might end up being gifts and vice versa where some gifts may turn out to be their struggles later on. It’s all part of our journey of learning and growing. The best we can do is as parents is to honour our children for who they are and where they are at the moment. (Please note that this doesn’t mean that you should give them whatever they want. They still need boundaries and our guidance to help them grow into healthy and happy beings.) This article, 6 Ways to Stop Comparing Your Kid to Others, has some good tips on what to do as parents.

NEW on the Counselor’s Blog this week is information about the Virtual Parent Book Club 2021 that will be run by Ms. Alex. See link for more information.

Have a wonderful and restful weekend! We look forward to seeing you again next week.

Week 14 November 15th – 19th

Dear EY1 community,

It’s been another exciting week in EY1! The children have adjusted remarkably to the new hybrid schedule and showed great enthusiasm towards their second week of in-school learning. We also had a wonderful time celebrating Loy Krathong this week and the children were invited to dress up in traditional Thai costumes.

Loy Krathong Photos

We also welcomed Ms Annie to EY1 this week who is our new classroom Nanny. She is a very kind, gentle person and is wonderful with the children. She is from Samutprakarn province and she has over 15 years experience of working with this age group. She loves the colour pink, cats and her favourite food is noodles! We feel very lucky to have her as part of the EY1 Team this year.

We continued with our remote learning with Small Group Calls, PE, and Music throughout the week. For our WACKY WEDNESDAY call on Wednesday, we inquired into the History of Loy Krathong and Ms Ran led us in some traditional Thai dancing. Our Owl friends helped us with our daily check-ins too at home AND at school!

Photos from Remote Learning

The EY1’s were perfect examples of Inspiring individuals and Nurturing Passion in Ourselves and Others as they engaged in our Art activities this week. They all displayed their individuality and creativity when creating their Owls and Krathongs as they carefully made choices on what colours and resources they would like to use to display their unique personalities!

We want to say a big thank you to all of the families that took the time to fill out the survey we sent out last week. It was wonderful to see from your perspective how well your child transitioned and how prepared you felt as parents. The results were overwhelmingly positive with over 93% saying they felt very prepared. The children have settled into their new learning environments and hybrid model amazingly well and that all comes down to you as parents supporting them through this exciting yet nerve racking experience. Thank you again for your continued support!

Thank you for all your amazing support as the children made their transition to school. We are so thankful for our continued support and partnership and it has been so nice getting that face-to-face contact with all of you too!

Happy Loy Krathong day and we hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best,

 1 Welcome to EY1

What an exciting week it has been!

We had a lot of fun welcoming our Group 1 and Group 2 students to campus and to actually play in our EY1 Classroom!! Many friends were familiar with many of our songs and routines. They especially loved seeing photos of themselves and of their friends from the past months of activities on Seesaw.

This week, our focus was on supporting the children’s transition to in-person learning two days a week in our hybrid learning model. The children practiced some familiar routines and songs as well as learned some new ones. They especially enjoyed playing on the playground and interacting with classmates they’ve only seen online. All the children were incredibly brave and embraced the IB Learning Profile, Risk Taker, to try new things and meet new friends. Group 1 joined us on Monday and Tuesday.

We welcomed Group 2 students on Thursday and Friday. They were more than ecstatic to set foot in the EY1 Classroom! As teachers, being able to see their smiles and experience their energy in person were the magic we’ve been missing during these past months of remote learning.

We continued to have our specialist classes – PE, Music, Art and Library – throughout the week, some while in person and some during the remote learning portion of the week. We also had our FIRST WACKY WEDNESDAY call on Wednesday when we were all learning remotely. Ninja friends helped us with our daily check-ins all week, so during this call we got to learn more about what ninjas wear and read a story about a bunny who wants to be a ninja (link: Ninja Bunny by Jennifer Gray Olson).

Did you know that your EY1 student is very capable? When we allow them to do things that they can do for themselves, we are giving them the message, “Hey! You can do it. I believe in you.” You are also giving them opportunities to develop skills and self-confidence! Some things that our EY1 students can do include:

  • Carry their own backpack 👍
  • Walk to class and walk to car by themselves (they DON’T need to be carried) 👍
  • Carry and hold their own water bottles 👍

As always, our school counselor, Ms. Alex, also has many wonderful resources on her Counselor’s Blog to support parents. The most recent are some wonderful resources and research on the importance of play.

Thank you for continued support! It’s an exciting and tiring week for all with all the new experiences we’ve had. All the children were great with all of our safety measures, especially wearing their masks all day and frequently handwashing. Have a wonderful and restful weekend! We look forward to seeing you again next week.

Week 12: November 1st – 5th

Dear EY1 Community,

It has been a very busy but exciting week with preparations underway for the return of students to campus. Thank you to all the families who attended our EY1 returning to school parent meeting this morning. It was nice to see everyone and share some important strategies to support both parents and students with this transition and family milestone. If you were unable to attend or would like to revisit this we have attached the slides from the presentation below in our Parenting Corner.

This Week’s Learning & Fun
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

In small group calls this week, we took the time to talk about our feelings towards the school reopening next week. We practised our early literacy skills by listening to stories about different animals starting school. We focused on the story, ‘The Kissing Hand,’ which follows the story of Chester, a racoon who is worried about starting school for the first time. His mum helps ease his worries by sharing a family secret called the kissing hand to give him the reassurance of her love any time his world feels a little scary. The children were then invited to share their own feelings about starting school and practised the kissing hand strategy with their loved ones at home.

We had a new theme for art and check-in this week of MONSTERS! The children LOVED making their monsters with Ms Noi and were very proud and eager to share these with their teachers and friends.

In our Fun Friday call we had a monster bash! The children listened to a story about monsters called Monsters like us and we learned a new song and dance ‘Monster Dance, Monster Freeze. We also revisited our popular game in EY1 of hide and seek but this time our monster friends had a turn to hide. The children practised using positioning words such as under or behind as well as important social skills of taking turns, waiting and listening carefully to others.

Fun Friday01 (1) Fun Friday02 (1)

Specialist classes continue to be a highlight for some students. The children really enjoyed story time with Ms Ran this afternoon as it’s always a lovely way to wrap up the week.

- Kim bday balloonA very Happy Birthday to KimEnjoy your birthday and celebration this weekend!

Bats! Bats! Bats!! We’ve had so much fun with bats this week, including having bats help us with our Daily Check-in. We’ve also gotten to learn a little about bats. They like to sleep during the day but they come out at night!! We also learn that they sleep hanging upside down and they LOVE to eat fruits. Bats also come in many different sizes AND like the bees and butterflies, they help pollinate the flowers so more yummy fruits can grow!

This Week’s Learning & Fun
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Our focus in Language was on learning the letter B and on making and listening for the /b/ sound like in the beginning of the words “bat” and “ball.” We also practiced forming the letter B with playdough. In the process, we got to practice their small motor skills too.

For our Unit of inquiry on “Relationships,” we got to “meet” some more people who would also work at school. This week’s guests included our School Nurse, a Cleaner, a Security Guard and of course, our very own Ms. Nit, our Class Nanny!. We are grateful to them for taking time from their busy schedules to “visit” our EY1 classroom via pre-recorded videos.

In our Fun Friday, it was a totally “batty” time!! In addition to celebrating Kim’s birthday, we had fun with a bat song, a bat story and even a game of hide-and-seek! Links below to the song and story as well as photos from Fun Friday and this week’s learning are below.

PE, Music, Library and Storytime were no exception to all the fun we’ve had this week. Not only the children were challenged to be active and creative, so were all the teachers!!

It is finally happening! We will be able to go to some in-person learning soon, in addition to our remote learning. While the prospect is exciting, transitions and changes can be a source of anxiety for our little ones and even adults too.

We have also learned that when both parents and children know what to expect, the likelihood of a positive experience is very high. School has held and will continue to hold some parent sessions to orient parents to what the school reopening will look like. Please attend these if you can. But, if you cannot, watch the recordings. There is a lot of important information. If we are prepared, then we can be in a good position to best support our children.

Because we recognize how important this transition is, the EY1 Team would like to hold a session for our class parents to ask any specific questions. Please mark your calendar for the EY1 Parents Session on Friday, Nov. 5, 9:00-9:45 am. During the session, in addition to trying to answer your questions, we will also show you a video of what the drop off and pick up will look like for EY1 as well as how our classroom will be set up. You are welcome to show these to your children so they also know what to expect and can feel comfortable and successful from Day 1. Below is a graphic with examples of what you can do and say for a successful drop off at school.

Thank you for your amazing support. Our journey with our EY1 children’s learning continues as we move to a Hybrid Model as schools are allowed to open slowly. We continue to count on your partnership for a successful transition for our EY1 students. We hope you will be able to join us in our EY1 Parent Session on Friday, Nov. 5th (link also on EY1 Schedule) as we talk about and share some strategies for successful first days for our EY1’s. Thank you again for sharing your children and being on this journey with us!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please email us at dinnhe.kr@kis.ac.th or sian.py@kis.ac.th.
