Week 10: Oct 18th – 22nd

Dear EY1 community,

Welcome back everyone! It was lovely seeing you all again and hearing about all your amazing adventures over the October break. We had a PUMPtastic time together in EY1! The children were excited to get right back into the swing of things and enjoyed all our Pumpkin themed learning engagements this week!

It was also a very special time in EY1 as we welcomed our new friend Anya and her family to our EY1 community. All the children have made her feel extremely welcome and she makes a wonderful addition to the class. Thank you for being so brave and a true risk taker this week Anya!

This Week’s Learning & Fun:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

In our small group calls this week, we began tuning in by inquiring into what family pumpkins belong to fruits or vegetables? We also wondered how pumpkin’s grow and watched a short video on the life cycle of pumpkins. They are pretty amazing!!!

In Math, we practiced our number recognition, counting and comparing skills as well as learning and saying the words more and less. The children really enjoyed the song about 5 little pumpkins. They showed great enthusiasm when playing the Peekaboo game using visuals to count how many dots they saw. This is called subitizing and helps us making connections.

For our Unit of inquiry on “Relationships,” the children shared drawings and photos from their holidays and practices retelling all the wonderful things they got up to! Everyone did a wonderful job at being risk-takers and communications as they each shared their favourite family memories.

Today all the children showed their support in raising awareness for PINKTOBER at our Fun Friday call. They were invited to wear an item of pink clothing or a breast cancer pink ribbon. We also went on a scavenger hunt around the house to find something PINK!

We continued with our pumpkin themed fun by learning a new song about a dancing pumpkin, read a new story about a visit to the pumpkin patch and a popular friend in EY1 Mr Gerry took us on an adventure to find the BIGGEST pumpkin in the field!

This Week’s Learning:
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Even as pirates, we carried on with our learning this week! In Math, we went on a buried shapes hunt and continued to practice our counting skills with all the treasures we found.

In Language, we practiced making and listening for the /p/ sound like in “pirate” and forming the letter P with playdough. In the process, the children got to practice their small motor skills too.

For our Unit of inquiry on “Relationships,” we learned about some people we would meet at school, other than teachers and classmates. We are grateful to our special guests, who “visited” our EY1 classroom via videos. After their visits, some children had the following “wonderings.”

EY1 WWA Wonderings

In Fun Friday, it was Pirate Day! The children got to show off their pirate gear and artwork that they had made in Art this week. We had a pirate song, a story and even a treasure hunt!! It’s confirmed!! EY1’s do make great pirates!

To help our child become more emotionally intelligent, it begins with us understanding what emotions means. Have a look at the article, “7 Amazing Facts About Emotions That You Should Know.” Did you know that emotions can be “contagious” and that we can “catch” other people’s emotions? Imagine what this can mean for our children!

Week 8: Sept. 27th – Oct. 1st

Dear EY1 community,

Can you believe we have already completed 8 weeks of school? Time really does fly when you’re having fun! It’s been a magical ‘unicorn’ themed week in EY1 and we’ve had lots of fun together.

This weeks Learning

This week we continued with our UOI on relationships. We have been learning about each other and our families and now we want to look at relationships within our school community. For many of our EY1 students this is their first ‘school experience’ and the concept of school might be unnerving for them to understand at this point in time. So we inquired into ‘What is school’?

We began tuning in by observing a photo of the KIS PYP building. The children were great thinkers and risk takers as they shared their connections with the group.  We also explored some photos of our EY1 classroom looking at what the previous EY1 children are learning and playing, what they are wearing such as the different school uniforms and most importantly all the fun they were having in the PLAYGROUND!

What is School_ EY1 Jam 1 What is School_ EY1 Jam 2 (1)

The children were also invited to engage in an asynchronous activity on Seesaw where they needed to create a self portrait piece. We introduced the idea in small groups by first looking at a picture of a face (made of buttons and other craft materials) and asked the children to share their thoughts. The children made some great connections as we explored our similarities and differences such as hair colour, do we all have the same or is it different? We also counted out how many eyes we have, ears, nose and mouth. We then made our own faces with playdough together, Then the children were encouraged to check out the activity and draw their portraits independently with the support oftheir parents.

We responded to the story ‘Does a Panda go to school’ and began to make connections and comparisons asScreen Shot 2564-10-01 at 12.57.26 to how people and animals can learn and why the animals do not join children in going to school. Next week we will talk about our school community and how we connected to other people within that. We will be interviewing a few very important people within the school community and learning a little more about them.  We also learned a new goodbye song this week. “Zoom zoom zoom,” which the children really enjoyed!

Unicorn Art & Fun Friday!

This week the children were invited to make unicorn horns with Ms Noi in Art class. They were super proud of their wonderful creations and were excited to share these with their teachers and friends during our small group calls. For Fun Friday this week we decided to have a unicorn party and dress in unicorn clothing and our horns, play a Unicorn game and learn a new unicorn dance.

How to help our children to be good at making choices? Let’s look at the phrase, ‘Be careful!’ As parents and educators, we find ourselves using this phrase too often with our children even though we know taking calculated risks and engaging is risky play is beneficial to their overall development. It is important to remember to use meaningful language to help them navigate a risky choice rather than dissuade them from trying it.

See below some great alternatives for the words ‘Be careful’.

Week 6: Sept. 13th – 17th

Dear EY1 community,

Although it was a short but sweet week, we still managed to have lots of fun together. We continued to inquire into our current UOI ‘‘Relationships” by getting to know each other a little better. This week the children were encouraged to be risk-takers by teaching their teachers and friends how to greet others in their home language. We also shared some of our favourite things such as food, toys and animals and discussed who had similar interests and likes within the class community.

We had a lovely time celebrating ‘Dot Day’ on Wednesday! The children all looked fantastic in their dot clothing and we had lots of fun playing games using our dots from our home learning packs, reading ‘The Dot’ story book and then creating our own marks/dots and sharing them on Seesaw.

Week 2: Aug. 16th – 20th

Dear EY1 Families,

It has been lovely spending time with you all in our small group calls this week. While this start to the school year was not what we had anticipated, we are extremely thankful for all for your efforts this week. Our main goal over the next few weeks is to make this a positive experience and a smooth transition to life at KIS for our little ones.

We had  lots of fun in our small group calls this week playing games, singing songs and getting to know each other. They children were engaged, they listened, watched and joined in for the parts they felt comfortable to do so. It was with your gentle support and guidance that made these first group calls such a huge success and all the children did so well!

Although remote learning is not ideal for most children, especially for the children in our age group, there is still so much to be gained. As parents, you have been modeling to your children how to deal with situations that are not ideal by handling them with positivity and choosing to make the best of them. These life skills are so valuable and are often not so easy to teach. WELL DONE, PARENTS!

While remote learning is not what we (parents and teachers) have signed up for, looking on the bright side of things, there are still so much to be gained for our young children, especially when our understanding is that this is only a temporary situation.

Benefits include:

  • Becoming familiar with our teachers and EY1 peers and building those important relationships within our EY1 community
  • Learning new songs and games from the EY1 program that the children will then know when we start on campus
  • Online skills – Sooner or later, our children will need to learn these skills to be successful adults in the world we live in today. Though the timing for them to learn these skills is not ideal, we have the opportunity to guide them and to teach them about finding the right balance

We hope you enjoyed this week as much as we did. Here are some photos from this weeks’ online engagements:

Ms Noi and Ms Ran really enjoyed meeting you all this week as well as all the specialist teachers! We had lots of fun dancing with Ms Lynn and Mr Max on Wednesday. We learned some new songs with Mr Chris on Thursday and listened to some wonderful stories with Ms Lindsay on Friday!

Looking ahead…. Schedule and reminders for next week:

EY1 Weekly Schedule – A copy of the EY1 Weekly Schedule for week of 23rd-27th August (like the one below) has been emailed to you. Please refer to that document for all the active links to access the calls and classes. The image below is just for reference so that the links remain accessible only to our EY1 community.

Schedule Wk 3

*We have kept the timings of the small group calls similar to last week with a few minor changes. There will now be small group calls on Monday instead of Friday and a special group call for our FUN FRIDAY/HOUSE DAY activity. You will also notice we have swapped the grouping of the children so that you all have opportunities to meet some new friends and their families. Please check carefully for your child’s name as their group colour might have changed.

*If you have not yet had the opportunity to sign in and join our class Seesaw, it would be great if you could give this a try over the weekend. We have posted an activity for you to practice uploading a photo.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to email us dinnhe.kr@kis.ac.th or sian.py@kis.ac.th

Have a lovely weekend
