G3 Weekly Update 22.04.22

Good afternoon G3 Parents and Families,

Welcome back after the Songkran & Easter Break. It has been really lovely to catch up on all the wonderful things the kids have been up to. They seem well rested and ready to work.

I would like to welcome three new families to  Grade 3, I am sure you will make them all feel very welcome.

A huge welcome to G3A Marcus, G3B Sarina & GC Nadee they have been a wonderful addition and have settled in nicely.

Friday we celebrated World Earth Day.To mark the day KIS we will be starting a semi-meat free Mondays (no pork, beef or chicken), action discussed by the sustainability committee but ultimately initiated by a group of Grade 6 students. They will be helping to educate the KIS community as to the “why” of this action.

Mr Chris put the love of performance and music back in PYP today just before lunch as G2 and G3 gave a wonderful Samba performance. 🥁

It was a pleasure to welcome Chye to KIS this week. She will be the new Head of PYP next academic year.

Language

This week the children were introduced to a new genre of writing which we will focus on, over the following seven weeks – Persuasive writing

Students started by a cold write where we had a brief discussion about how they could persuade someone to do, buy or take them somewhere. We were impressed the following day when they were able to improve their first drafts  as we introduced the features that needed to be included in a persuasive piece of writing.

UOI

Students tuned into the key words we will be exploring through this Unit of Inquiry. Where they used https://kids.wordsmyth online dictionary, https://www.thesaurus.com/ and class dictionaries and thesauruses to write  definitions and find synonyms.

Maths

This week students were reintroduced to calculating the perimeter of regular and irregular shapes and converting the measurements mm – cm and cm – metres. Their task towards the end of the week was to combine these two together to design their dream bedroom and calculate the perimeter of all the furniture and then convert the measurements they used.

This week  students have been presented with a time table challenge to work on now until the end of the year. Through different maths platforms (Prodigy, IXL,Khan Academy/ interactive games and testing themselves during paired activities all students will have the instant recall of all multiplication facts up to the 12 times tables. We hope that you will help at home too.

Reading

Students continued to work through the units using Wonder Reads in their class reading groups. There will be a combination of reading and writing activities for the students to do. Students will use a range of reading platforms (ORT, library books, Raz, Epic & Newslea) to read for pleasure at an instructional level. Students are encouraged to apply and use reading strategies when reading both independently and with an adult.

Students should be reading three Raz books a week.
